What is the Micron Rating for an Air Oil Separator?

Published by Filter Element Store on May 18, 2023

"What's the micron rating for my air oil separator?" is a common question we receive. As you may know, air / oil separators remove oil mist and droplets from compressed air. The micron rating, which indicates the smallest size of particles the separator can effectively remove, can vary depending on the specific application and the type of air oil separator used.

Micron Rating for Air Oil SeparatorMost of our air/oil separators are 0.3 micron, but separators can typically range from 0.3 to 3 micron depending on the application requirements. High-efficiency oil separators can go even lower, removing particles as small as 0.01 microns.

These micron ratings are not set in stone. A separator rated for 3 microns will likely remove a significant proportion of smaller particles as well. Many manufacturers of air/oil separators can advise the efficiency of their separator in terms of percentage of particles removed. An air/oil separator with an efficiency of 99.999% of 0.3 micron would be a very efficient separator.

The specific micron rating needed for a given application will depend on a variety of factors, including the type and quantity of oil being separated, the operating conditions, and the required purity of the separated air. Feel free to contact us if you're unsure of the best separator for you.
