Founded in 1956 in China, KAISHAN Compressor began manufacturing rock drilling equipment under the brand "Kaishan Rock Drills". The word “Kaishan” (开山) in Chinese can be translated roughly as “opening the mountain,” which nods to the company’s early focus on heavy-duty machinery used for rock drilling and mining applications. As Kaishan grew, it expanded into small piston-based air compressors for mining operations, and later use in workshops and factories.

They began manufacturing rotary screw compressors in the 1990's and quietly built a presence in the United States in the early 2000's. Since then, the company has launched formal branches, different manufacturing facilities abroad, and a line of reciprocating compressors. The affordable cost of Kaishan air compressors and large marketing budget has helped Kaishan achieve major presence in the USA compressed air market.
